Om Freedom

om gum ganapatayei swaha om gum ganapatayei swaha
i live in the freest neighborhood of the freest city on the planet
om gum ganapatayei swaha
i am free to wake at four a.m. and chant to ganesha remover of obstacles
while bar-hoppers spilling onto the street beneath my window
are free to bray to high heavens while waiting for cabs to chauffeur them home
i am free to be angry suvs are free to blast salsa hip hop
or rai out their cab windows beneath my bedroom windows
as they wait for the light to change
i am free to chant om gum ganapatayei swaha
and to say good morning to the ghost of the moon
thanks for everything dear moon
and to rise from the bed that i share
with the woman i went to canada to marry
i am free to see the beautiful faces of my cats
to stoop down to pet them and say good morning ladies
good morning girlie girls what kind of day shall we have
om gum ganapatayei swaha
i am free to make shelter in my heart
covered against all who would turn pain into an engine for war
i am free to be free of lies
i am free to resist manipulation
i am free when i speak up for freedom
om gum ganapatayei swaha
may aung san suu kyi be free
may she return to the arms of her people
may all beings be free

Dear Eva –
What a beautiful poem! Thanks for bringing me and our freedom archive such compassionate words of wisdom. I am still composing mine, but you have inspired me.
